This years theme focuses on work done by Photojournalist Corky Lee and the Utah Chapter of Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) to recreate the iconic photograph of completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad but with Asians in the picture. The original image taken in 1869 did not include any Asians at all.

Listen carefully and think about how Robert Kiyosaki , a forth generation Japanese American whose parents arrived in USA just after the building of railroads, describes the American society of that time.

The original image, while widely distributed, was inaccurate in that not a single Asian was present despite the fact that over 12,000 workers from Asia built the railroad. Yet they represented the majority of the workforce. African slavery had already been banned on the frontier which included states of the Mid and West coast where the new tracks were being laid. Because there were no slaves, Chinese were imported to work instead.

The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States or simply the Civil War, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865, after seven Southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America (the "Confederacy" or the "South", which grew to include eleven states). The states that remained in the Union were known as the "Union" or the "North". The war had its origin in the fractious issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories.

The Chinese arrived in the U.S. in large numbers on the West Coast in the 1850s and 1860s to work in the gold mines and railroads. They encountered very strong opposition—violent as riots and physical attacks forced them out of the gold mines. The Central Pacific railroad hired thousands, but after the line was finished in 1869 they were hounded out of many railroad towns in states such as Wyoming and Nevada. Most wound up in Chinatowns—areas of large cities which the police largely ignored. The Chinese were attacked—especially by Irish Americans (who were themselves recent immigrants)--as undesirable and inassimilable strangers who brought disease, economic competition, vice (gambling, prostitution and opium), and immorality to the communities in which they settled. The Chinese were further alleged to be "coolies" who were practically slaves, and were said to be not suitable for becoming independent thoughtful voters because of their alien mindset and their control by tongs.

Since 1869, anybody born in US became an citizen automatically. At the same time, however, the US government banned immigration of Chinese women. As a result, many Chinese men led the bachelor life because they were not socially acceptable to the larger society being victims of both personal and institutional racism.

The first concrete plan for a transcontinental railroad in the United States was presented to Congress by Asa Whitney in 1845.

The world's First Transcontinental Railroad was built between 1863 and 1869 to join the eastern and western halves of the United States. Begun just preceding the American Civil War, its construction was considered to be one of the greatest American technological feats of the 19th century. Known as the "Pacific Railroad" when it opened, this served as a vital link for trade, commerce, and travel and opened up vast regions of the North American heartland for settlement. Shipping and commerce could thrive away from navigable watercourses for the first time since the beginning of the nation.

The transcontinental railroad provided fast, safe, and cheap transportation. The fare for a one week trip from Omaha to San Francisco on an emigrant sleeping car was about $65 for an adult. It replaced most of the far slower and more hazardous stagecoach lines and wagon trains. The number of emigrants taking the Oregon and California Trail declined dramatically. The sale of the railroad land grant lands and the transport provided for timber and crops led to the rapid settling of the "Great American Desert".

The Union Pacific recruited laborers from Army veterans and Irish immigrants while most of the engineers were ex-Army men who had learned their trade keeping the trains running during the American Civil War.

The Central Pacific Railroad faced a labor shortage in the more sparsely-settled West. It recruited Cantonese laborers in China, who did prodigious work building the line over and through the Sierra Nevada mountains and then across Nevada to their meeting in northern Utah.

The First Transcontinental Railroad (known originally as the "Pacific Railroad" and later as the "Overland Route") was a 1,907-mile (3,069 km) contiguous railroad line constructed between 1863 and 1869 across the western United States to connect the Pacific coast at San Francisco Bay with the existing Eastern U.S. rail network at Council Bluffs, Iowa, on the Missouri River.

Opened for through traffic on May 10, 1869, with the driving of the "Last Spike" with a silver hammer at Promontory Summit, the road established a mechanized transcontinental transportation network that revolutionized the settlement and economy of the American West by bringing these western states and territories firmly and profitably into the "Union" and making goods and transportation much quicker, cheaper and much more flexible from coast to coast.

Most key workers and supervisors were trained by previous on-the-job training and knew what needed to be done and how to direct workers to get it done. Most of the semi-skilled workers on the Union Pacific were recruited from the many discharged Union Army and Confederate Army veterans and emigrant Irishmen escaping poverty and famine in Ireland.

After 1864, the Central Pacific Railroad had the same Federal financial incentives as the Union Pacific Railroad as well as some construction bonds that were earlier granted by the state of California and the city of San Francisco. The Central Pacific hired engineers and surveyors who had extensive experience and training building railroads and knew what needed to be done and how to supervise others to get it done—some were Canadian and British trained. The Central Pacific, facing a semi-skilled labor shortage, relied on some black employees escaping the slavery and turmoil of the American Civil War and many emigrant Chinese manual laborers for construction. Most of these Chinese emigrants were escaping the poverty and terrors of the Taiping Revolution in the Kwangtung province in China. Supervisory, engineering and skilled jobs were done with experienced "white" workers including a lot of Irishmen. The Chinese, despite their small stature and total lack of experience with railroad work, handled most of the heavy manual labor needed to get over and through the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains and across the Nevada and Utah deserts. In that time period there was only a very limited amount of work that could be done by animals, simple machines or black powder. Most of the black and white workers were paid $30.00/month and provided food and lodging. Higher skilled and supervisory jobs paid more. Most Chinese were initially paid $31.00/month and provided lodging. They bought and cooked their own food—just as they desired. In 1867 this was raised to $35.00/month after a strike.

Upon the completion of their work on the CPRR's portion of the Pacific Railroad, many Chinese workers moved on to other railroad construction jobs including with the Central and Southern Pacific. Of those that left the company's employ, some returned to their families in China with their savings, while others sent to China for wives and settled in various western communities as miners, laundrymen, and restaurateurs. Some returned with their families and settled into "China towns" in various cities. The majority who remained in the United States, however, returned to and settled in the San Francisco Bay area, Sacramento, Marysville and elsewhere along the Pacific coast. Because of the later restrictions on the immigration of Chinese workers, many never got married or reunited with their families if they stayed in the U.S.

Central Pacific
On January 8, 1863, Governor Leland Stanford ceremoniously broke ground in Sacramento, California, to begin construction of the Central Pacific Railroad. After great initial progress along the Sacramento Valley, construction was slowed, first by the foothills of the Sierra Nevada (U.S.), then by cutting a railroad bed up the mountains themselves. As they progressed higher in the mountains, winter snowstorms and a shortage of reliable labor compounded the problems. Consequently, after a trial crew of Chinese workers was hired and found to work successfully, the Central Pacific expanded its efforts to hire more emigrant laborers—mostly Chinese. Emigrants from poverty stricken regions of China, many of which suffered from the strife of the Taiping Rebellion, seemed to be more willing to tolerate the living and working conditions on the railroad construction, and progress on the railroad continued. The increasing necessity for tunneling as they proceeded up the mountains then began to slow progress of the line yet again.

The Chinese built 15 tunnels for Central Pacific. These tunnels were about 32 feet high and 16 feet wide. When tunnels with vertical shafts were dug to increase construction speed, and tunneling began in the middle of the tunnel, at first hand powered derricks were used to help remove loose rocks up the vertical shafts. These derricks were later replaced with steam hoists as work progressed. By using vertical shafts, four faces of the tunnel could be worked at the same time, two in the middle and one at each end. The average daily progress in some tunnels was only 0.85 feet a day per face, which was very slow, or 1.18 feet daily according to historian George Kraus. J. O. Wilder, a Central Pacific-Southern Pacific employee, commented that “The Chinese were as steady, hard-working a set of men as could be found. With the exception of a few whites at the west end of Tunnel No. 6, the laboring force was entirely composed of Chinamen with white foremen and a "boss/translator". A single foreman (often Irish) with a gang of 30 to 40 Chinese men generally constituted the force at work at each end of a tunnel; of these, 12 to 15 men worked on the heading, and the rest on the bottom, removing blasted material. When a gang was small or the men were needed elsewhere, the bottoms were worked with fewer men or stopped so as to keep the headings going.” The laborers usually worked three shifts of 8 hours each per day, while the foremen worked in two shifts of 12 hours each, managing the laborers. Once out of the Sierras, construction was much easier and faster.

Masonry walls such as the "Chinese Walls" at Donner Summit were built across canyons to prevent avalanches from striking the side of the vulnerable wooden construction. A few concrete sheds (mostly at crossovers) are still in use today.Together Visualshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05294783374331268563noreply@blogger.com0475 Driggs Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11222, USA40.7189205 -73.95429279999996215.196886000000003 -115.26288679999996 66.240955 -32.645698799999963tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8014530692619999360.post-30671415144553412052014-01-27T19:00:00.000-05:002014-02-26T13:19:52.782-05:00Randy Gener Prayer Vigil
A local journalist has suffered brain injuries and remains in intensive care after being viciously attacked near his home earlier this month. Just before 4 a.m. on Friday, January 17, theater critic and journalist Randy Gener was on his way to his apartment from the opening night of a play, walking on Seventh Avenue between 54th and 55th streets. Just steps from his home, Gener was attacked and beaten. He was found a short while later, bloody and unconscious.

Gener has previously written about theater for the Village Voice, as well as the New York Daily News, the New York Times, NPR, New York, and a couple dozen other big-name media outlets.
The suspect is described as an Hispanic male in his 20s, approximately 6 feet tall and about 160 pounds with short black hair, police said. He was last seen wearing black jeans and a black jacket. Police said the suspect fled in a grey four door Nissan with Mississippi license plate number KAT-397.

The critical information all came from a tipster.
“He doesn’t remember at all what happened that night. It had to have come from somebody who heard our pleas,” said Gener’s sister Jessica Blair-Driessler.

The family is again hoping someone will hear their pleas and turn in whoever was responsible for the attack.

“We’re focused on his recovery, but part of that process is finding the person who did this and understanding why,” said the victim’s sister.

Now, pleas have been coming in from the entire Filipino community.
“One thing is for sure — justice will be served in the end,” said New York Philippine Consul General Mario Lopez de Leon Jr.
In addition to social justice issues, OCA-NJ organizes scholarship, internship and other programs to help New Jersey Asian American Students pursue educational opportunities. The work of OCA is ongoing.

OCA NJ chapter
is a state chapter of OCA, a section 501(c)(3) national civil rights
advocacy and educational organization dedicated to advancing the social,
political and economic well-being of Americans of Chinese and
Asian/Pacific Islander descent.

OCA is comprised of
concerned Americans and is dedicated to securing the rights of Chinese
Americans and Asian Pacific American citizens and permanent residents
through legislative and policy initiatives at all levels of the
government.

OCA’s goal is to embrace the hopes and
aspirations of the newly two million citizens and residents of Chinese
ancestry in the United States, as well as, to better the lives of the
nearly ten million Asian Pacific Americans across the country.

OCA is a national organization dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans.
To fulfill its mission, OCA has established the following goals:

to advocate for social justice, equal opportunity and fair treatment;

to promote civic participation, education, and leadership;

to advance coalitions and community building; and

to foster cultural heritage.

Founded in 1973 as the Organization of Chinese Americans, OCA
aims to embrace the hopes and aspirations of Asian Pacific Americans in
the United States.

over 80 chapters and affiliates across the nation to develop both
leadership and community involvement. OCA chapters and our affiliates
are establishing strong local programs in all parts of the country.

OCA’s
headquarters in Washington, D.C. gives the OCA National Center an
effective vantage point for monitoring legislation and policy issues
affecting Asian Pacific Americans. In addition, OCA is able to build
national support and to work in coalition with other national groups
around issues affecting Asian Pacific Americans.

OCA
takes no collective position on the politics of any foreign country, but
instead focuses on the welfare and civil rights of Asian Pacific
Americans.

OCA's motto is “Embracing the Hopes and Aspirations of Asian Pacific Americans.”
Serve the People: The Asian American Movement in New York charts a history of Asian American activism, organizing, and cultural production in the 1970s, the first exhibition to focus on New York as a center of this national phenomenon. Through posters, leaflets, newspapers, film, and music, Serve the People shows how Asian American identity was shaped by reclaimed histories, revolutionary politics, feminist awareness, third worldism, and community organizing. The culture created by young activists and artists in the movement embodied their ideals, speaking to the excitement and urgency of the time.
The show is still going on until March 23, 2014.

In 1970s New York, one might have heard the folk group A Grain of Sand sing about “the struggle,” walked by a mural celebrating Asian American histories, or attended a screening of a documentary on garment workers in Chinatown. I Wor Kuen and Worker’s Viewpoint Organization distributed their revolutionary messages through newspapers and study groups, while community organizations like Asian Americans for Equal Employment galvanized Chinatown into mass protests. Basement Workshop served as an umbrella for artists’ projects as well as groups like Chinatown Health Fair, Asian American Resource Center, and the Amerasia Creative Arts Program.

In recovering and presenting this past, Serve the People cuts against the stereotype of political apathy among Asian Americans, and offers a radical history for today’s activists to build upon. The political horizon for Movement activists was limitless, whether they worked towards community control, artistic self-expression, or political overthrow. This energy is palpable in the culture they produced. In light of the great immigration of Asians to America since the 1960s and the looming questions of America’s economic and political relation to Asia, these works remind us of a moment of pride and revolution for a newly-formed identity.

Visitors are invited to handle and read through two of Interference Archive’s newest acquisitions: the seminal collection of art and poetry Yellow Pearl, and copies of the nationally-circulated Bridge Magazine. Other objects on display include the Asian Americans for Action Newsletter (published in by Yuri and Bill Kochiyama in their home), buttons and posters for the Chinatown Health Fair, iconic photographs of the Peter Yew police brutality protests by Corky Lee, and posters designed by artist Tomie Arai.
On Saturday November 9, 2013 in Times Square from noon until 2PM there was a protest against ABC's Jimmy Kimmel show.

Protesters did not like use of comedy to bring up a dark subject that they took personally. They are so hurt and even afraid of passive aggressive violence from other members of society.

There is an old American Proverb that goes like:

Out of the mouths of babes (oft times come gems).

Children occasionally say remarkable or insightful things. For example: Mr. and Mrs. Doyle were quietly bickering in the kitchen when their seven-year-old daughter came in and said, "You guys should get counseling." After a surprised pause, Mrs. Doyle remarked, "out of the mouths of babes." Child: Don't eat so much candy, Mommy. Candy is bad for your teeth. Mother: out of the mouths of babes oft times come gems.

There were about 500 protesters at event. Chinese Internet users came up with a rebuttal video in response to the 'Kill everyone in China" segment of Jimmy Kimmel's "Kids Table".

An episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live that aired on October 16 has so many Chinese and Chinese-Americans hurt after a satirical sketch called "Kids Table" had the idea that the US get rid of all people in China to get off the trillion dollar debt owed to China.

The segment at one point touches the topic of the money that the US owes China. When 6-year-old Braxton suggests that the US "kill everyone in China" to solve the problem. Kimmel then replies, "that's an interesting idea."

Jimmy Kimmel has already apologized but protesters have not accepted it yet.
I won a raffle for a huge print by Gabriel Biderman. I first met Gabe at BH Event Space. I attended his class twice. His night photography seminar was very interesting. There are so many definitions of time. Such as Civil, nautical, and astronomical twilight. In his presentation, Gabriel also went into details about camera setting and equipment to be used for night photography. He became one of my favorite instructors. What a coincidence it was to win raffle for his print.

His presentation inspired me to do my very own night photography which will be published in a later post. Night photography is difficult. Exposure times are long. Tripod is needed. It takes a lots of patience in the field. Position of sun and moon in sky are important. Timing has to be just right.I can really appreciate all the time and effort put into his work of art.

The photograph won at the raffle looks wonderful. It looks like a small island in the middle of a lake. Tranquil water at the bottom of the photo and star trails at the top. I wonder about the story behind the shot as well as location.

The photo is mounted on a frame called Aluminyze. I have never seen anything like this. It is amazing. The image is actually infused into a thin sheet of aluminum. It can easily be hung or upraised without a frame. It has a sleek and contemporary look. Really cool.

In his seminar Gabriel explores the images that can be created at night when
you expose for seconds, minutes, and even hours with film and digital
cameras.
Great weather today but uneven lighting conditions at today's event. Clear sky creates areas that are both too dark and too light on subjects. Images can also suffer color cast if one side is lit by direct sunlight while other portions of image are in shade because color temperature of shade about 40% higher than sunlight.

However shooting subjects in shade can be problematic too because there light has not direction and it too dark. Everything is fast moving at an event so it is challenging to get kind of result you want.

Increasing exposure compensation by third to full stop during shoot is helpful to raise light levels.
In post production, contrast was increased and white balance was corrected.

In sunny weather conditions, treat strong sun light like as if it were a rim light. Use it to separate subjects from background. If your lucky enough to catch the light at right place and time, it gives snapshots a more fashionable look.
Due to its popularity, Maid cafe's have been opening around the world. For example:

MeiDolls in Philippines

CosCafe in Singapore

Maid Cafe Brno in Czech Republic

And now, New York City has its own Maid Cafe. Every month Reni Mimura performs at Amber Cafe in West Village of New York City.

So what is Reni Mimura Maid Cafe like?

Reni Mimura Maid Cafe offers a menu similar to those of more typical cafés. Customers can order coffee, other beverages, and a wide variety of entrées and desserts. However, in maid cafés, waitresses service customers with a Moe attitude which adds to the image of the waitress as an innocent but pampering maid. For example: Everyone is greeted with "Welcome home, Master (Mistress)" (お帰りなさいませ、ご主人様! Okaerinasaimase, goshujinsama).

About 40% of customers where female. The rest were young men. The average age was about 20 years old. Everybody sits down at small tables with a drinks to watch Reni Mimura sing and dance with her partners. There is lots of audience participation with Reni Mimura as well as other customers. Games and activities include:

Thank you for being born (Celebrating birthday of the month)

Welcome to the Maid show (Welcoming new guests)

30 second speech time (Guests can promote their talent, work website whatever)

Congratulation Achievement (Guests can announce their achievement)

Moe Moe Jyanken (Cute Akihabara style of Rock, Paper and scissor and a winner gets a free gift)

Customers attending Reni Mimura Maid Cafe participate in the performance. In addition to food and beverages, the audience participates in the show. Everyone has opportunity to introduce himself to the audience, sing and dance with Reni Mimura.

The performance included the hit "My Shy Master."

Maid cafés were originally designed primarily to cater to the fantasies of male otaku, obsessive fans of anime, manga and video games. Otaku (おたく / オタク?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga, or video games.

The image of the maid is one that has been popularized in manga and anime series, as well as in gal games. Important to the otaku attraction to maid cafés is the Japanese concept of moe (萌え, pronounced "moe") , which generally describes a love for anime, manga or video game characters. More specifically, moe refers to adoration for young or innocent-looking female characters who are adorable and cute in appearance.

Another song I like is Shining Star.
Visiting a maid cafe in Tokyo not convenient for most people, but now everyone attend a Reni Mimura Maid Cafe in New York City.

Today, the maid café phenomenon attracts more than just male otaku, but also couples, tourists, and women. Though the waitresses at maid cafés are sometimes interpreted as objects of romantic or sexual desire, they can also be viewed as simply aesthetically appealing figures. One female patron of maid cafés explains, “Sitting here and admiring how pretty the girls are is like admiring a flower”.

If you have never been to a Maid Cafe, then you must experience Reni Mimura Maid Cafe at least once in your life. If you are visiting New York a tourist, Reni Mimura Maid cafe is an act that your whole family will enjoy. Especially teenagers who are fans of anime and manga.

Reni Mimura performs every month at Amber Cafe in West Greenwich Village of New York City. She has been in New York since 2009 and is the only Maid Cafe show in New York.
